5 Tips for Maintaining a Work-Life Balance

Have you ever felt like your personal life was hoisted on the high end of a seesaw and your work was the heavy end, refusing to let up? We’ve all been there. As employees with strong work ethics, we all walk a fine line between living a fulfilling personal life and succeeding at work (all while enjoying it).

Maintaining a work-life balance is difficult but it can be done, and you will be better for it— both mentally and physically. Physical and mental signs of work burnout include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Extreme body pains
  • Increased illness (which eats into your PTO)
  • Depression
  • Impaired concentration
  • Detachment

These five best practices for maintaining a healthy work-life balance can help release your inner bliss.

1. Take yourself off the grid

Turn your phone off or keep it (and other electronics) away in order to be present with your family, friends or yourself when you’re not at work. Disconnecting from electronic devices prevents you from checking work emails, notifications and other distractions that come with having the internet at your fingertips.

2. Exercise

Starting and maintaining an exercise routine, no matter what kind, is important to your overall well-being. Daily activity helps boost endorphins, which make you feel happier. Exercising also gives you confidence, which in the workplace can help you stay focused and motivated.

3. Establish likes and dislikes

What do you like about work? What don’t you like? Take time to figure out why you don’t like it. Is it you or the job? Is it the people, the responsibilities or the tasks? Figuring out the root of the issue is the first step to fixing it. This will help you learn how to navigate the obstacles to make your job more enjoyable. Ultimately, it will improve your daily work environment and attitude.

4. Prioritize

Make a list of your career goals and figure out how to get to there. Research suggests people who set life goals and dedicate time to achieve them are happier in the long run. If you’re one to go with the flow, it will be harder to motivate yourself without a list of pre-determined goals to work toward.

5. Don’t waste your time

Spend your energy and time on activities and with people that make you happy. What happens outside the workplace such as negative relationships will affect your happiness in the workplace. Learning to keep your work and personal life separate is one thing; surrounding yourself with unfulfilling activities and people is another. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and support you or pick up a new hobby. By doing something you love outside of work, you’ll feel less pressure to spend more time at work, resulting in a greater sense of fulfillment.

No one deserves to feel like an overworked mule, so take the time to implement these best practices to help you identify what works best for you in order to feel balanced at work and in your personal life.
