How Work-Life Balance Can Be Your Thing This Year

Over the past few months, I’ve been reminded of the famous statement that you’ve heard on every flight, “please put your oxygen mask on before helping others.” This is a very powerful phrase that’s applicable to every aspect of our life. From your career to family, you can’t give 100% to anyone or anything until you’ve taken care of yourself first. Here are some recommendations for getting a jump start on developing your work-life balance this year.

It’s OK If You Can’t Do It All

Give yourself permission to say "no" to certain events, invitations or projects that don’t provide you with a good ROI. Learn to value the importance of setting boundaries because you can’t be everything to everyone. Slow down and ask yourself, what do I want to gain this year? What do I value most? What is important to me? This will allow you to focus on the projects that add value to your career and your personal life.

Don’t Forget About Your Inner Self

Acknowledge that hardships, challenges, and changes are all there to deepen us. They teach lessons and give us a second chance to do things differently.

Start Your Day with Meditation

There are so many ways to meditate. Buddhify is a guided mediation app that lets you choose from different 5-10 minute topics which help ignite your passion, purpose, and energy. These mini meditations come in handy first thing in the morning, throughout the work day, and before bed at night. Try to carve out 10-20 minutes each day to let your mind rest and refocus.

Go to Sleep

Technology and media offer overwhelming amounts of distractions from getting the proper amount of sleep. Pick a reasonable time for bed, grab a great book to cozy up with, and then rest well. Consistently getting a good night’s sleep to recharge your batteries is critical to your wellbeing, your ability to focus while at work and tackle your to do list.

Do Something Nice for Yourself Everyday

  • Curl up with a book and pour yourself a cup of tea
  • Go for a run
  • Buy yourself flowers
  • Cook your favorite dish
  • Get a massage
I can go on and on but you get the point, find time for yourself to do the things that you love.
